Hi, I can't get broadband out on the range in Texas. I hear directway sat is avail and you get 400-1000kbts. Will that be enough to play broadband only online games? I know there is a lag from sat to modem. Also they have a fair usage polocy about 170mb for a certain time. Has anyone been limited to this limitation?

i have verizon dsl 800k up and 128 down and its ok for playing online but i cant host more than 4 people in a game. 170mb a month of transfer is very little though. i dont have any transfer limit on my dsl.

you should be ok with direcway, maybe ping kind of high but not bad enough to cause serious lag. Good luck

I beg to differ. I tried playing Nascar Thunder 2004 on my DirecWay system, and the lag was unplayable. Dialup worked MUCH better.

The reason is not the amount of data it can transfer... DirectWAY theoretically is just as fast as DSL or cable, BUT your ping is gonna be really high... THAT'S what's causing your lag, NOT the speed restrictions...

exactly, the data has a long way to travel...but I didn't think It would be that bad sorry, my mistake.

I was talking to somebody who has starband which is the other company that provides broadband via satellite... I pinged www.yahoo.com and mine took between 50 - 150 milliseconds... The other guy's took between 800 - 1500 milliseconds... As long as you're not trying to do voice or intense gaming you'd probably be fine... Once it gets moving, speeds are great... Just the ping you have to keep in mind... It's much better than dial-up anyways
