Yeah - go on. See my post "CD-R Burning Speed". That answers the question on a technically appraised basis.

Directly, I would say this, if you had, say, a Yamaha 3200, and you told it to burn at 24x, it uses "running OPC" (see my post) to monitor disk condition as reported by the reflection. Speed is adjusted to optimise for the condition of the disk. If you have an el-chepo burner, then at 24x it is possible that you will get bad burns because the dye isn't exposed for long enough to a properly focused beam of adequate power (in any combination).

For what it's worth, 4x to 8x seems to be the most reasonable with a decent brand of CD-Rs to avoid FMV and audio skipping and excessive load times as the laser seeks the data.

I agree with Balto on using the lower speeds . You can get away with faster speeds on a good quality burner ( Plextor or Yamaha ) but on average 4x works the most reliably for me .

I run a SCSI Plextor 12/10/32S in my main machine and an IDE Yamaha CRW3200 (24X) in my DVD-R machine. I still burn at 4x regardless. I mean, how big of a hurry can you be in...?

As a rule of thumb I burn 6x for originals and 4x for backups. I've made mistakes and burnt at 24x and 32x and had no problems but why make a coaster for the sake of 5 minutes?

My "elcheapo" burner burns anything at these speeds.

With great respect, the burn speed for originals might as well be the same for backups. if the reader reads either without error, then the burn speed can be anything within the rules i suggested in my post "CD-R Burning Speed".

Of course you are free to choose your own speed, but the 4x and 6x differentiation is pointless.

FEK IT--SET IT ALL TO 2X AND GO GET LUNCH! EVEN AT 8X A FULL CD TAKES ABOUT 20 MINUTES TO READ AND RIP, AT 4X IT TAKES ABOUT 35. Y RISK CREATING COASTERS--FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO FOR ANOTHER 15 MINUTES.
